The Japanese Tattoo
by Sandi Fellman

In 1992, when American photographer Sandi Fellman was visiting Japan she began the series of color portraits for this striking volume. She used a rare large size Polaroid camera to create these photographs. Her subjects were the Irezumi, a secretive group of people drawn from the underworld of Tokyo and Osaka who wear elaborate full-body tattoos. This book includes text on the tattooing process, common motifs, the sociology of the tattoo, and relationships between the tattoo masters and their clients. 1st Edition, published in 1986 by Abbeville Press. 12 x 9 1/2. Oversized Paperback, 112 pages.
